To develop an engine coolant level sensor that would meet the accuracy and reliability requirements of Le Mans Prototype Class 1 endurance racing, whilst also satisfying the weight and mechanical demands of the installation.
Motorsport imposes extreme vibration and temperature values that require a sensor of exceptional mechanical durability whilst providing high accuracy, dependable measurement outputs.
Coupled with these needs, the device must have minimal weight, integrated electronics, within a compact and unique mounting flange configuration.
By using the solid-state, capacitive technology refined by Gill R&D, a compact, lightweight and mechanically dependable sensor was produced to integrate into the customers' installation. By consideration of a number of materials options, a balance of weight, corrosion protection and cost was achieved to satisfy customer need.
The sensor had a unique flange design to fulfil the mechanical constraints and was provided in a unique colour finish to assist in differentiation with the other level sensors used on the car.
