A European manufacturer of locomotive and rolling stock required a sensing device for installation in the sump of the diesel engine to monitor the oil level. The existing device supplied with the engine was not reliable enough for the application, therefore the customer contacted Gill R&D to produce a sensor which would withstand the demanding application.
Due to the tight space restriction of the engine, the customers required a miniature capacitive liquid level sensor which could be specified to a particular cable length. In addition, the daily extended service levels of railway rolling stock, demanded a very robust mechanical design to ensure that the sensor provided the reliability and durability required of rail equipment.
A miniature liquid level sensor was developed with a threaded flange incorporating a sealing O-ring for installation straight into the oil sump mounting port. Significant quantities of sensors were installed into the rolling stock as a like-for-like replacement to the existing OEM sensors.
